Scallop Shell

Our History (continued)

POCF’s logo is the scallop shell. Pilgrims to Santiago affix a scallop shell to their garments as the trek’s distinctive emblem, joining a tradition that has lasted for more than 1,000 years.

POCF’s inspiration comes from a medieval sermon unlocking the symbolism behind the scallop shell’s two identical halves, which, “represent the two laws of charity with which the bearer must truly protect his life: that is, to love God above all things and to love one’s neighbor as oneself.”

“Love neighbor as self”: POCF is our imperfect effort to live out this great command, which is echoed by the world’s great religious traditions. By helping provide healthcare and education to a few of the world’s poorest, we hope to love and serve these neighbors of ours.
